The bold teaser trailer has already angered the die-hard fans, but this movie might be the fun-bad situation.
Warner Bros. and Microsoft released a teaser trailer for their new production, A Minecraft Movie and it’s so whack, I actually believe it might not be too bad.
The trailer introduces the main characters, played by Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jason Momoa and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The biggest surprise is Jack Black, who will portray the iconic character of Steve. So we got a cast made of very likable actors, which seems like a good choice. The movie is directed by Jared Hess, known for his work in Ninety-Five Senses and Nacho Libre. Storywise, the four main characters are pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld.
Other than the characters, we are introduced to the world of Minecraft itself, which looks as cubic as ever. The thing is, the creators decided to put the world and mobs somewhere between a typical animation style and a realistic one, leaning a bit more to the style of the Super Mario Bros. Movie for example. This blend made everything in the trailer look a bit off and creepy. The presence of the real life actors in this setting is not making it any better.
Minecraft fans have flooded the trailer with negative, but very entertaining comments. It is clear, they are not happy with the creative choices. I believe the team behind this movie tries to land somwhere in the middle between fans of the game and people who only know Minecraft by title. It might be their downfall, but we shall see.
I’m not a huge fan of Minecraft, but I’m willing to risk seeing the movie, even in Imax, cause it might turn out to be surprisingly good. It might also be a stinker. We’ll never know until we see it. I have somewhat high hopes for the character of Steve, played by Jack Black. What this guy did to Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie was simply a marvel. This cubic wonderland and the roster of characters and mobs will be interesting to see on a big screen.
A Minecraft Movie will release in cinemas, including Imax, on April 4, 2025.
