Future Games Show at Gamescom 2024 had a ton of announcements. Here are our picks for the best of them.
The biggest gaming event in the world continues with Future Games Show, which full filled to the brim with announcements. Let’s get into the best of them.
Future Games Show – top announcements
Mars Attracts
While the teaser barely showed us anything, I think putting a game in the Mars Attacks universe is a great idea. The movie is awesome, if you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend you do so. By putting this title on this list I give the devs my trust credit. The game comes out in 2025 and you can wishlist it on Steam right now.
Spine
This gunfu action fighting game seems very promising. I love the animations and gameplay. Hopefully the game will play as good as it looks in the trailer. Plus the soundtrack was created by Le Castlevania, who also created music for the John Wick movies. The game comes to PC and consoles with no release date yet.
Civilization VII
The game that had a lot of screen time at this event. As you can imagine seeing Civ logo each time you saw the logo of FGS. The seventh iteration of this cult classic series promises new mechanics, systems, cultures and a few surprises. The game will be narrated by Gwendoline Christie, who you might know from her roles as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones and Captain Phasma in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The game comes to PC and consoles (including Switch) on February 11th, 2025.
Zero Space
An interesting RTS game inspired by Star Craft. They’re even making it with consulting done by professional Star Craft players. Hard to say more, but I am intrigued. The game is most likely in early stages of production, since there is no release date yet. You can wishlist it on Steam right now.
Greedfall II
A sequel to the well received RPG, Greedfall, will take us across the sea to the land of Gacane, the old continent. This game’s story is inspired by the real world events of The British Empire invading North America, with a bit of a fantasy coating. The game looks like it could get a little polish in the animations department, but other than that it looks pretty cool. The game will be available in early access on Steam from September 24th, 2024.
Akimbot
An indie Ratchet & Clank inspired game made by the guy who created Pumpkin Jack. This has to be awesome. The trailer is action packed with some great gameplay and funny characters. The neon futuristic artstyle looks gorgeous. I simply cannot wait to play this game. The best part is, its coming in just a few days, on August 29th for PC and consoles.
Metaphor Re: Fantazio
This promising looking RPG was made by the same people who brought us Persona 3, 4 And 5. And you can clearly see connections between the two franchises in the trailer. For that alone they have my attention. I can’t wait to check this game, when it launches for PC and consoles on October 11th, 2024.
Dwarven Realms
World of Warcraft players might be very much interested in this title. It looks so action packed, it’s crazy. Dwarven Realms is like WoW on drugs. I’d love to see it in action. The game launches on September 27th, 2024 for PC.
Maui the Shapeshifter
This metroidvania is like a Hollow Knight with a coating of Disney’s Moana. You will play as the shapeshifting demigod Maui and traverse a lovely crafted, colorful world. The game is yet to get a release date, but you can wishlist it on Steam right now.
The Spirit of the Samurai
Possibly the most interesting game of the show, when it comes to the artstyle. The Spirit of the Samurai is a 2D action game Set in Feudal Japan, as you can deduct from the title. It looks absolutely incredible. The game is animated in the style of puppet stop motion. I love the idea. Plus the gameplay looks hella fun. The game launches this Fall on PC.
Summary
Future Games Show had plenty of games to talk about, but the show was lacking freshness in my opinion. While we got a few trailers for very promising games, most of the event had a lot of filler games. Most titles presented were indie games. Don’t get me wrong, a few gems have been shown, but FGS left me wanting more fresh and interesting games. Let’s hope Amazing Indie Games will deliver.
