Retro gamers with Apple devices have the time of their lives with more and more emulators heading to the App Store.
After Apple opened their App Store gates to the range of new apps, the emulation officially started on iPhones, iPads, and even on Apple Vision Pro. I already covered a bumpy start with the iGBA app. It’s been just a few days and we already have tons of news about more emulation apps making their way to Apple devices.
The biggest emulator on the App Store right now is Delta. The app has blown up on Apple’s App Store and thanks to it we have the means to play Nintendo retro games on our iPhones. Delta supports emulation of NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and even Nintendo DS. And it’s finally available officially on the App Store.
So now that Nintendo enthusiasts are covered, what about other systems? We already got the confirmation that PPSSPP, a Playstation Portable emulator will make its way to Apple products as well. The information comes straight from the emulator’s creator, Henrik Rydgård.
Sega fans won’t be left out as well. Provenance, a multi-system emulator is also coming to Apple’s store. The app will cover a plethora of systems, including Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo Virtual Boy, Nintendo Gamecube, and possibly others. This information was covered by iMore, who got an e-mail confirming Provenance on Apple systems from the project lead, Joseph Mattiello.
As much as I love the change in Apple’s policy regarding emulators, I’d like to remind you that emulators are meant to be used to play the games you own. I know it can be very tricky with some titles from our childhood that we’d like to replay, but let’s keep it legal. Hopefully, some developers and publishers will use this opportunity to save some classic titles that are disappearing in front of our eyes and simply cannot be played legally anymore. But that’s a conversation for a different article.
I’m sure we will hear much more about many other emulators heading to iPhones and iPads in the coming weeks. In the meantime enjoy
