The beloved Japanese series’ first games have finally been released outside of Japan. That’s great. But why not in english?
If you had a Nintendo DS you might have played The Legendary Starfy game on your console. But did you know it was already a fifth game in the series? Originally released on Game Boy Advance and later on the Nintendo DS, Starfy got four awesome games in Japan before making its debut in North America.
If you’re not familiar with Starfy, its a platformer in which you control a cute starfish character through land and water stages. It resembles both Kirby and Mario games for me. The gameplay is not particularly unique, but not too many games focus too much on water levels. Plus, its a lot of fun in Starfy series.
Now we finally will be able to play the first three titles in the series thanks to Nintendo making them available through their Nintendo Switch Online service. The only caveat is, the games are in their original Japanese version, including all the UI. Well, that’s a bummer. It’s not terrible, because these are platforming titles, with pretty minimal text, but still.
Some of us waited a long time for these to be officialy released out of Japan, and it would be awesome to see them translated. I guess it would require much more work than to simply port a game in its original state, but sometimes that work is worth doing.
Anyway, I will definetly play all of these, and maybe learn a few Japanese frases along the way. The Starfy games are available now for the users with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion.
