Nintendo’s CEO Shuntaro Furukawa just confirmed on X that the Nintendo Switch successor will have an announcement by the end of this fiscal year.
Many Nintendo fans, including me, are eager to hear some official news about their next console. Fortunately, Shuntaro Furukawa finally shed some light on the new hardware. It wasn’t much, just a confirmation of the existence of the hardware and its future announcement.
So now that we know about the successor console, the only thing left to do is to wait for the official announcement. Hopefully, we will get a long presentation about the hardware, just like we did with the Nintendo Switch.
There are a lot of rumors and “leaks” about what the new console could be like. Possibly it will be an evolution of the existing hardware, a simple spec bump. Maybe it will be something entirely new and original. Most leaks suggest the console will be just that. An improvement over the original Switch. And I would be completely happy with that.
Besides confirming the reveal of the new hardware Furukawa also stated we will get a Nintendo Direct this June and we will see the rest of the 2024 software lineup for the Nintendo Switch. This is also great news since we barely have anything else left to be released. It’s just Paper Mario and Luigi’s Mansion at the moment.
With the upcoming direct I hope to see a few more big titles heading to the console. Just to, you know, have something to play before the hardware comes along.
We now start to slowly say goodbye to the Switch. It is a console that made a huge impact on the gaming industry. It revived the dying handheld gaming. After Switch, we got a lot of awesome handheld PCs like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go. It sold over 141 million units getting quite close to the success of both the Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS. Who knows, if it continues to sell well, maybe it will become the best-selling console of all time. Only time will tell.
I had a blast with the Nintendo Switch. Still do actually. I often leave my apartment with it in my backpack, still playing on trains and subway and at home. Fingers crossed we won’t see another Nintendo Wii U situation. But I think The Big N learned their lesson and we will get another few years of fantastic titles and awesome hardware.
