The developer behind Shantae series is bringing back their classic Game Boy Advance game.
During Anime Expo 2024, the developer WayForward announced a comeback of their classic title Sigma Star Saga on modern platforms in 2025.
If you’re not familiar with the title, Sigma Star Saga is a sci-fi shoot ’em up and RPG mashup game, featuring classic top-down RPG-style exploration as well as space battling. You play as Ian Recker, a pilot who becomes a double agent and infiltrates the enemy faction of Krill, to help the humans win the conflict with the alien invaders.
While the game was not revolutionary by any means, it was unique in its genre mashup and can still be a lot of fun. The gameplay is solid, the challenge is definetly there and I really like its colorful and wacky environments and characters.
The game will be brought to modern platforms thanks to Limited Run Games and their Carbon Engine, the development tool, which helps porting classic games to modern consoles and PC. As of now we only know it will be available on Steam and in a form of a reproduction cartridge for the GBA, available through Limited Run Games shop, most likely. I presume it will be available on all the major platforms.
I’m a huge fan of bringing older games to new platforms. First of all, because it means new generation of gamers get to enjoy them, and second, because it helps with games preservation, which is a major problem in todays gaming world. With that said, I’m looking forward to play Sigma Star Saga.
