This colorful adventure title mixes 2D and 3D gameplay to deliver an unforgettable experience.
Eversince I first saw the reveal trailer for The Plucky Squire, I’ve been hooked. This indie game features a mix between 2D and 3D gameplay, which makes me think of The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds and Super Mario Odyssey 2D sections. I would not be surprised to learn these games inspired the developers.
All Possible Futures is a relatively new studio, founded by Jonathan Beedle and James Turner, two experienced devs, who previously worked on mainline Pokémon games, among others. Their experience and good sense of what makes a game fun is shining in the trailers for The Plucky Squire.
The game follows the adventure of Jot, who is a character in a 2D story book, who is kicked out of it into the 3D world outside of his adventure by the evil Humpgrump. Out of his storybook, Jot will encounter many different tasks, both in 2D and 3D worlds.
The world of Mojo, where all the adventure takes place is a beautifully crafted place, which will offer a lot of activities. From what we’ve seen so far, the action takes place on a desk, and possibly throughout a whole room. There we will find all sort of mugs, boxes and books, which Jot can jump into for the 2D sections. In these sections, there is a mix of genres to experience by the player. There are archer missions, hack’n’slash missions and from what we’ve learned in the latest trailer, even shoot ’em up missions.
Both 2D and 3D worlds will introduce friend characters, who will help Jot. In the new trailer we meet Zip, a cute rocket character, who works as a jetpack for our protagonist, offering new ways of traversing the colorful world. The genre mixing and different sidekicks will most likely provide a diversified gameplay.
The Plucky Squire possibly won’t be the most unique game on the market, but I can see, that the devs put their heart and soul into this project. The game seems to take the best elements from the best adventure games out there. Like I said, there is a sprinkling of Zelda and Mario, but also some Little Big Planet and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Jot’s adventrue will be available by the end of 2024 on all platforms.
