The aniticipated expansion blending late 90’s with Metal Gear has gotten a release window.
Many fans have waited months for this news. Warframe: 1999 is coming this winter. The developers have shown a big gameplay presentation during the Tennocon 2024, a Warframe oriented expo held in London, Ontario in Canada.
For those of you not knowing what game Warframe is. It’s a free to play third person shooter, which mixes in elements from genres like looter shooter and MMO RPG. The game features a highly stylized sci-fi world and heroes. The titular Warframes are a form of an armor or exoskeleton, which offer a set of abilities and protection from damage. The game blends shooting with melee fighting in a fast, action packed gameplay.
While the game takes place centuries in the future, Warframe: 1999 wil take us to Earth of 1999, but it’s not the same place that we know. In this expansion the world of 1999 features treats we all know and love about our own ’90s, arcade machines, pizza, old PCs and boys bands (ok, don’t quote me on loving the ’90s boys bands).
You’ll play as Arthur, a mysterious character set to find and destroy Dr. Entrati. In the gameplay demo the devs introduced your team, The Syndicate, which will aid you on this quest. Each character has enough personality to distinguish them from one another. Nothing crazy or especially fresh about them.
The gameplay itself is not going to surprise Warframe veterans, it’a a fast paced action shooter, with ocasional sword fight. There will be hordes of regular enemies for you to mow through and also interesting bosses. In the presentation the big boss fight makes Arthur fight a tank. It’s very Metal Geary if you ask me.
There’s a good portion of humor and ’90s references in the gameplay demo. But the action takes the first place. You’ll be able to traverse the world with a motorcycle. Locations are semi open world fragments of a city and they look fantastic. The adversaries also have a nice design. Arthur and his team, not so much. They remind me of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 5 a bit, but Solid Snake had much better design. With that said, it will be familiar to seasoned players, and that’s a good thing.
The expansion looks very promising, especially for a free to play title. This game has evolved a lot in over a decade it’s been on the market. I like to see the devs are still passionate about their game and continue to expand this world, keeping it interesting.
